Research Overview

Research topics that I am interested in include projects related to fitness and health promotion/prevention specifically for the geriatric population. To advance my knowledge in this area, I achieved certification as a Board Certified Specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). This distinction is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge and skills in physical therapy specialty areas. This goal required that I spend extensive time and resources undergoing self-study and research in the area of geriatric physical therapy and successfully pass a standardized examination. I am one of only 30 Geriatric Certified Specialists(GCS) in the State of CT and am the only PT faculty member with a GCS distinction. Another part of my research agenda involves assessment of tools used to measure fitness and function. During the past year, I also collaborated with a fellow faculty member on two scholarly projects that have been submitted for publication and are currently undergoing review in this area. I am also pursuing status as a Strong Woman Ambassador through collaboration with a faculty member in the Department of Extension as part of the outreach mission in the hopes of bringing this health promotion program to UCONN and surrounding communities. The Strong Woman Program is a series of exercise programs based on extensive scientific research that is offered at certified facilities throughout the country. If I am able to achieve this goal, I will be the only Strong Woman Ambassador in New England. In order to become a trainer in the Strong Woman program, you must be trained by an Ambassador.
