Research Overview

Stephen L. Schensul is Professor of Community Medicine and Health Care and Director of the Center for International Community Health Studies (CICHS) at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, USA. The CICHS program has trained over 1000 health professionals from 80 countries in the developing world, provided international research and internship experiences for 250 medical and public health students in 54 countries and conducted an active program of international research. Dr. Schensul’s research has focused on community health and development in urban areas of the US (Chicago, Miami and Hartford, CT) and internationally in Peru, Sri Lanka and Kenya. In the last two decades, Dr. Schensul has directed a program of research and intervention on sexual risk behavior and prevention of HIV/STI among young women workers in Mauritius, youth in Sri Lanka and a variety of populations in India. He is currently principal investigator of an NIH-funded, five-year project focused on the prevention of HIV transmission within marriage in Mumbai, India. He is the recipient of the University of Connecticut Provost’s Award in 2009 for Research and Public Engagement.
