Research Overview

My primary research interests include improving the roles of community pharmacists to improve medication adherence and safety in vulnerable populations such as those with mental illness and older adults. Much of this work has focused on enhancing pharmacist-patient communication. I continue to explore new approaches for pharmacists to educate and motivate patients towards safer and more consistent medication use- such approaches include the use of technology such as mobile applications, virtual agents, and other web-based platforms to ensure consistent pharmacist behavior in education and monitoring. Related to these primary interests is a strong interest in how community pharmacists can effectively work with interprofessional teams and be instrumental in facilitating the integration of healthcare delivery and reduce healthcare disparities. More recent work has explored the use of larger databases to examine policy-related questions related to medication adherence and patient safety. In addition, I am examining new avenues of medication safety research that includes developing patient-centered medication-safety decision tools and getting pharmacists more engaged in reducing prescription opioid abuse and overdose.
