InCHIP is excited to launch its new Spring Grant & Scientific Writing Workshop Series. The five-part series will be led by Michaela Kiernan, PhD, Director of the R01 Countdown Program at Stanford University School of Medicine.
The workshops will cover various topics including:
- How to navigate the new NIH simplified peer review framework
- Writing concise scientific articles and grants
- Writing compelling grant applications
- Keys for crafting responsive grant resubmissions
- Strategies for increasing writing productivity at individual, team, and institutional levels
Through these five workshops you will:
- Learn specific techniques for each topic area using interactive, skills-based approaches
- Quickly improve skills with short practice exercises

Length of each workshop: 2 hours.
Where: All workshops will be offered through Zoom.
When: Fridays from January through May (~monthly; details below)
Intended audience: UConn and UConn Health faculty, post-doctoral fellows, clinical fellows, graduate students, and university research staff.

About the Instructor
Dr. Kiernan currently directs the Stanford University School of Medicine (SOM) R01 Countdown Program, an intensive grant writing boot camp for junior faculty, generating $179M in first-time National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01s across 14+ NIH Institutes and other grants, R01 Countdown Program. Dr. Kiernan is a Senior Research Scholar at the Stanford Prevention Research Center. She received her PhD in social psychology from Yale University and has expertise in research methods and statistics. Funded by the NIH and the American Heart Association (AHA), her current research program focuses on optimizing innovative retention strategies for randomized trials.

Strategically Address the New NIH Simplified Peer Review Framework
- Leverage 2 pragmatic R01 Countdown tools—the Significance Innovation GRID and the APPROACH AT A GLANCE tables—to underscore the independent contributions of the Significance and Innovation sections and to succinctly synthesize key Rigor and Feasibility details for reviewers.

Workshop 2 – February 27th, from 1pm – 3pm
Write Concise Scientific Articles & Grants
- Master 6 practical techniques to substantially improve the clarity and conciseness of journal articles and grants.

Workshop 3 – March 27th, from 11am – 1pm
Write Grants that Get Funded: The Reviewer’s Perspective
- Learn 8 grantsmanship strategies including how to tactically prioritize NIH criteria within the specific aims; set the stage well ahead with NIH; and ‘show your math’ for crucial methodological decisions. Updated to address new NIH criteria as of January 2025.

Workshop 4 – May 1st, from 1pm – 3pm
Write ‘Extremely Responsive’ Grant Resubmissions
- Learn 5 in-depth strategies including ‘interpret the tea leaves’ (i.e., leverage the maddening discrepancies between scores & comments) and construct a compelling 1-page introduction with punch. Updated to address new NIH criteria as of January 2025.
