What is InCHIP

InCHIP is an interdisciplinary research institute focused on fostering collaborative and innovative research in the areas of health and health behavior. InCHIP researchers have conducted projects across a wide array of public health issues, including nutrition and obesity, cancer, substance use, medication adherence, and HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.

InCHIP provides support to any faculty member at UConn focusing on issues related to health or health behavior. Interested researchers can apply to become affiliated with InCHIP here. All InCHIP Affiliates who have faculty appointments at UConn have access to extensive services that can help investigators throughout the entire research process, from the development of novel research ideas and collaborative teams, to pre- and post-award support for grant submissions. InCHIP Services for UConn Faculty and Researchers

Developing Research Ideas

InCHIP organizes many opportunities for UConn faculty to learn about and discuss the latest findings in health and health behavior research with researchers from across the UConn community, and provides support for building successful research portfolios.

Building Researcher Networks

InCHIP hosts five Research Interest Groups (RIGs) in obesity, cancer, digital health, interprofessional healthcare, and HIV/AIDS, as well as the Collaboratory on School and Child Health (CSCH). These six groups provide a forum for researchers from across UConn and the community to identify research priorities in each health area and develop cross-disciplinary grant proposals and research projects to address those priorities.

Identifying Funding Opportunities

The InCHIP Boundary Spanners can conduct targeted funding searches across all federal agencies and national foundations. Additionally, new funding opportunities are regularly posted on the InCHIP website via the External Funding Opportunities Database and are searchable by health domain.

Mentoring Junior Faculty Members

The InCHIP Training and Development Core can connect junior UConn researchers with senior faculty members, who can mentor and provide them with the guidance necessary to build and expand their research programs and successfully apply for external funding.

Hosting National and International Leaders in Health Research

Every year, the InCHIP Lecture Series hosts some of the leading investigators in health and health behavior research from around the world. The Lecture Series includes presentations open to the entire UConn community, along with small workshops and discussion sessions where UConn faculty and students can establish connections with these cutting-edge researchers.

Creating Successful Collaborations

One of the core components of InCHIP’s mission is to foster research collaborations that bridge disciplinary and departmental silos. To this end, InCHIP provides many services to help researchers find collaborators and jump-start team science projects.

Identifying Researchers for Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations

The InCHIP Boundary Spanners offer dedicated support to find collaborators for specific research projects, arrange initial meetings, and facilitate cross-disciplinary communication.

Providing Intervention Expertise

The Intervention Core acts as a nexus where health researchers can connect with behavioral intervention experts, who can help them design, implement, evaluate and disseminate innovative behavioral interventions.

Connecting with Community Organizations

The Community-Engaged Health Research Core facilitates connections between UConn researchers and community leaders working to improve public health across the Hartford area and the state of Connecticut. The Core provides opportunities for UConn researchers to meet with leaders from community organizations interested in collaborating on health-related research, and it offers training and support to UConn researchers regarding the best practices in community-engaged research.

Building Successful Research Teams

InCHIP provides resources to facilitate the formation of successful, well-functioning research teams. Leveraging the latest findings in the Science of Team Science, InCHIP staff help UConn researchers develop cross-disciplinary research teams that are able to address the challenges associated with researchers from different disciplines working together.

Writing a Successful Proposal

The InCHIP Training and Development Core provides training and support to help UConn faculty members write successful grant proposals. By leveraging InCHIP’s extensive network of well-funded, experienced faculty, InCHIP provides personalized support to faculty members at every stage of the grant writing process.

Providing Feedback on Grant Proposals

The InCHIP Grant Proposal Incubator offers individual reviews of research ideas, sections of grant proposals, and entire grant proposal drafts. InCHIP works with faculty from across UConn to find reviewers with the required expertise to assess the specific proposal, and arranges for the reviewers to provide feedback.

Hosting Grant Writing Workshops

InCHIP hosts workshops and trainings on each aspect of the grant proposal process, including writing the various sections of a grant proposal (e.g., specific aims, budget, biosketch).

Identifying Grant Writing Mentors for Junior Faculty Members

InCHIP helps to connect junior UConn researchers with senior faculty members who are experienced grant writers. These senior faculty members provide mentorship to help junior faculty navigate the grant application process and develop their research ideas into strong proposals likely to be funded by external agencies.

Submitting and Managing Grants

The InCHIP Administrative Core provides a wide array of services to help UConn faculty submit their grant proposals and manage their awarded grant funds. It is important to note that, while InCHIP provides a wide array of grant management support, it does not retain any overhead from grants and no funds are diverted away from a researcher’s home department.

Assistance Submitting Grant Applications

InCHIP’s pre-award services include assistance preparing a grant budget and submitting the proposal through the Sponsored Programs Office.

Personalized IT Support

The InCHIP IT Group offers dedicated IT support to all investigators currently working on an InCHIP managed grant.

Grant-Related Purchasing and Payroll Management

InCHIP’s post-award services include administrative support for purchasing and payroll. These services are provided by InCHIP staff members who have extensive experience managing complex domestic and international project budgets.

Available Research, Meeting, and Office Space

InCHIP provides meeting space and fully equipped interview rooms to UConn-based InCHIP Affiliates conducting health-related research. Long-term research and office space can also be made available to researchers with grants being managed by InCHIP.

Seed Grant Opportunities

InCHIP annually hosts several seed grant competitions, providing the resources needed to stimulate innovative research likely to lead to significant external funding. Seed grant opportunities are usually announced shortly after the start of the fall semester.

InCHIP Lecture Series and Events

Through the Lecture Series, InCHIP brings distinguished speakers from across the world to UConn to present lectures and workshops to the entire UConn community. InCHIP regularly hosts workshops, networking events, and trainings across a wide range of topics.
