Research Overview

Dr. LaCoursiere is a Clinical Assistant Professor, University of Massachusetts, Boston. Dr. LaCoursiere’s research interests include informatics and technology, and the use of the Internet for health communication and intervention, particularly for chronic illnesses across the lifespan. Other research interests include complementary and alternative medicine, as well as family care and geriatrics. She has developed a Theory of Online Social Support, which is being used internationally, as well as the Attitudes Toward Online Healthcare (ATOHC) scale, which has been studied with various chronic conditions. Dr. LaCoursiere received her PhD from the University of Connecticut in 2003, and completed two fellowships at Yale University, one in Medical Informatics at Yale School of Medicine, funded by the National Library of Medicine, and one in breast cancer at Yale School of Nursing, funded by the Department of Defense. Her dissertation work, Telehealth Support in Cardiovascular Disease, was funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. LaCoursiere is also an active psychiatric and family nurse practitioner.
