Kevin Ballard, PhD
Senior Scientist, Preventive Cardiology, Hartford Hospital (Affiliate)
I collaborate closely with physicians and clinical scientists at Hartford Hospital and have established collaborations with several exercise and nutrition scientists at academic institutions, including the University of Connecticut, The Ohio State University, and the University of Hartford.
I have a strong background in exercise and nutrition studies investigating various exercise modalities and dietary constituents on exercise performance and cardiometabolic measures in healthy and clinical populations, including obese individuals, older adults, and statin users. My future research agenda will utilize this experience to investigate the independent and combined impact of physical activity and/or dietary interventions on the vascular, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory responses that contribute to vascular endothelial dysfunction and increase cardiovascular risk in populations characterized by obesity. A particular focus will be studies utilizing acute and chronic exercise and/or dietary strategies to mitigate postprandial oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory responses that otherwise contribute to transient vascular dysfunction.
A separate, but related, research interest is connected to my clinical experience at Hartford Hospital in the area of statin-associated muscle injury. Future studies are being developed to investigate the interaction between exercise, dietary strategies, and statin use in humans to further our understanding of lifestyle strategies aimed at increasing statin and exercise adherence.
