Research Overview

Dr. Volek is currently a research scientist and project coordinator for studies being conducted in the Human Performance Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology and the Department of Extension. Her research interests are in the areas of adolescent health, physical activity, dietary eating patterns, dietary carbohydrate restriction and obesity in youth and minority populations. Specifically, prospective investigations examining the effects of supplementation on responses to resistance exercise and sustainable community interventions to promote and evaluate in-school and after-school at risk youth in urban areas. As part of her passion for improving adolescent health though better nutrition and exercise, Dr. Volek is actively involved in community initiatives to improve health education and resources for school-aged boys and girls. Dr. Volek also consults and writes lay publications as a consultant with expertise in the areas of children and women’s fitness and health. She is a first generation born Cuban-American with a BS degree in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota, a MS in Exercise Physiology from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctorate in Exercise Science from the University of Connecticut.
