InCHIP Grant Development Summer Stipends for New Investigators

Description:

UConn’s Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP) is offering Grant Development Summer Stipends for InCHIP Network Members who are faculty at UConn Storrs and the regional campuses and have not been awarded external funding of more than $100,000 in total costs per year. These stipends help support faculty as they write an external grant application over the summer of 2022 and submit it no later than August 1, 2022.

Faculty selected to receive stipends will be given the opportunity to participate in optional mentoring and grant writing training during the spring semester. This will include an overview of best practices in grant writing, feedback on sections of grant proposals, and mentoring from faculty with extensive grant writing experience.

Funding Availability and Requirements

Awards of $2500 apiece are available for this competition. We anticipate awarding up to 10 stipends.

The stipend will be paid to the PI when the grant proposal is submitted to an external funding agency, which can be no later than August 1, 2022.

Any external grant proposal that is written with support from a Grant Development Summer Stipend must be submitted through InCHIP.

Key Dates:

November 19, 2021:  Application Due
December 2021:  Applicants Notified of Award Decision
By August 1, 2022:  Grant Submitted
End of August 2022:  Stipend Disbursed (contingent on grant submission)

  • Faculty who were awarded this stipend in previous years and still meet the criteria for new investigator status are eligible for this stipend in the 2021-22 round of stipends.
  • Only UConn faculty (at any rank) who have never been awarded, as a Principal Investigator (PI), a grant that provides more than $100,000 in total costs per year of external funding, are eligible for this stipend.
  • The Principal Investigator (PI) must have an advanced degree (e.g., PhD, MD, PharmD), have an eligible faculty appointment at UConn Storrs or one of the regional campuses, and be eligible to submit external grants through InCHIP. Eligible faculty appointments are tenured or tenure-track faculty, in-residence research faculty, clinical faculty, other research faculty, and research scientists/scholars.
  • Ineligible faculty appointments are post-doctoral fellows, lecturers, research assistants, research associates, visiting titles, and adjunct faculty.
  • Graduate students are not eligible for this opportunity.
  • Applicants are required to be an approved InCHIP Network Member by the time their final proposals are submitted. Applicants who are not currently a Network Member must apply to become one by 11:59 pm EST on November 5, 2021. The InCHIP Network Membership application form and instructions are available here. Please allow at least two weeks for approval.
  • The proposal should aim to fund a research project where the applicant is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the study. Ineligible proposal types include education-based capacity building projects unrelated to research; operating or program costs for community-based organizations unrelated to research; diversity supplements to existing R01s; and other non-research related funding such as loan forgiveness programs.
  • The proposed research must be clearly linked to a planned external grant application in the area of human health and be consistent with InCHIP’s mission, which can be found here.
  • Application Limits: Eligible faculty may only submit one Grant Development Summer Stipend application for 2021-22.
  • UConn faculty who work at UConn Health or Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) are not eligible for this stipend unless they can submit their external grant applications through InCHIP.
