Research Overview

One of my current research interests is to leverage the latest advancements in smartphone technologies and various embedded sensors for effectively tracking the mood status of a patient who is suffering mood disorder. Two of the most important issues in medical treatment of mood disorder patients are: (1) early identification of the illness; and (2) monitoring on the effectiveness of the medication applied for treatment. In our ongoing project, we are developing a software named SmartMood which turns the smartphone into a useful tool for tracking the mood status of the patients without any intervention on their uses of the phones. In SmartMood, various statistics about the mood of a patient could be obtained easily from the voice data captured from the smartphone. The generated statistics could serve as important indicators to alert the patient and his family members about any potential manic or depression episodes so that appropriate actions could be taken immediately. With continuous monitoring of the mood status of a patient, the statistics can be used to derive the normal mood of the patient and serve as important references to show the effectiveness of the medicines prescribed to the patient to speed up the recovery.
