Karin Haberlin

Graduate Student, Communication (Affiliate)

Research Overview

My research interests include behavioral health; online social support in general; the use of online social supports by people in recovery from mental health and addiction disorders; mobile gaming and its addictive qualities; quality of life assessment; health literacy; health information seeking; and effective communication of health and harm reduction messages. As an InCHIP Graduate Student Affiliate, I would seek to work on projects that involve patient education, engagement, and retention. My past professional experience includes work on several HRSA-funded HIV outreach and engagement projects, while employed by the Health and Disability Working Group (now known as the Center for Advancing Health Policy and Practice), Boston University School of Public Health. Since 2004, I have been employed by the State of Connecticut at the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, managing evaluation and quality improvement activities and overseeing federally mandated data submissions and other reporting to SAMHSA. At UConn, I work on new media, social marketing, and health prevention projects, as well as on studies of positive parasocial relationships with fictional characters.
