Research Overview

Over the majority of my career I have been focused on trying to understand, prevent, or modulate cardiovascular drug, device, and natural product induced diseases. Our main research lines have been in post-surgical complication prevention (post-cardiac surgery atrial fibrillation, post-surgical myocardial infarction, and post-surgical thrombosis), natural products that cause or prevent cardiovascular diseases, and the innate and pleiotropic effects of lipid modulators. I have worked collaboratively with investigators and clinicians from many health professions and backgrounds to conduct research lines which help patients receive better care. Over the past 10 years, I have altered my main focus and moved into the area of comparative effectiveness where I work to generate data that informs and impacts the healthcare system. I am passionate about allowing evidence-based decisions determine utilization and coverage rather than less desirable approaches such as rationing. I am heartened that we were designated an Evidence-based Practice Center by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. While the majority of my scholarly time is focused on systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and modeling, I am currently a co-investigator on several important projects with researchers from UConn Pharmacy and Kinesiology as well as from the Division of Cardiology at Hartford Hospital.
